Material preparation
Fabric in 3 colors ( I used Essex Linen Cotton fabric here.)
* You can also use elastic fabric. However, the shape of your pumpkin may not be same as mine.
Thread
Needle ( You will need it even you are going to sew it by machine.)
Stuffing ( I used polyester filling.)
A rattle insert if you are planning to make it as a rattle toy.
Simple!
Step 1: Cutting the fabric
You can download the free pumpkin pattern here.
Follow the instruction on the pattern sheet to get the pattern.
* When there is *mirror* pattern, fold the fabric with right sides together and cut two pieces at one tim
Step 2: Sewing the pumpkin
1. Sew the pumpkin parts together, two pieces at a time with right sides facing in. Leave 0.5cm seam allowance.
2. Trim the seam with pinking shears. If you do not have them, simply cut out some corners with scissors.
3. Smooth the seams with your fingers.
4. Sewing two pieces of the parts together with 0.5cm seam allowance.
* It looks like this inside.
5. Then, repeat the same process to connect all the parts together.
6. Now, we finished the main part.
Step 3: Stuffing and closing the pumpkin
1. Fill the pumpkin with your favorite stuffing. Do not forget the rattle insert if you are making a rattle pumpkin toy.
* Important: Stuff it very tightly to achieve smooth seams.
3. Start an arm-long double thread needle. Hand stitch around the opening with 0.5cm seam allowance.
4. Pull the thread until the diameter of the circle reduces to 2.5cm. Make a knot there to prevent the thread from loosening again.
5. Do not cut the thread. Use it to sew the bottom on.
6. Sew the bottom part on with 0.5cm seam allowance using the invisible stitch technique.
7. Repeat the same process to close the top. 80% done!
Step 4: Adding the stem
1. Sew two stem parts together with 0.5cm seam allowance.
2. Sew the third stem part together. Turn it inside out and smooth the seams with your fingers.
3. Hand sew the top circle using the invisible stitch technique.
4. Sew the stem on the top of the pumpkin using the same technique.
* I like leaving it without stuffing. If you like a stuffed stem, please go ahead.
5. Now, we have a completed pumpkin. If you don't want a rattle toy, you're finished. You can also try making another one in contrast colors.
Step 5: Make it as a rattle toy (optional)
1. To make the pumpkin as a baby rattle toy, we need to add a handle attaching the pumpkin. We have two parts here.
2. Fold the main part into half and sew the edge as above.
3. Sew the bottom on with 0.5cm seam allowance.
4. Turn it inside out. Smooth the seams with your fingers. Then, stuff it very tightly!
5. Do the same as when attaching the stem. Add more stuffing before you close the seam to ensure the handle stays upright.
