How to Knit Toe-up Cast On (Judy's Magic Cast On)

Updated: Mar 12

Toe-up Cast On (Judy's Magic Cast On)

Judy's Magic Cast On (JMCO) is a seamless and invisible cast-on method that I like to use for some toy designs. This method creates a neat and closed cast-on that blends seamlessly into the rest of your knitting. In this guide, I'll walk you through the steps to master this versatile cast-on.

What You'll Need for Toe-up Cast On (Judy's Magic Cast On)

  • Circular knitting needles (Magic Loop method) or double-pointed needles (DPNs)

  • Yarn of your choice

  • A tapestry needle (optional, for weaving in ends later)

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Position the Yarn

  • Hold the yarn with your left hand, positioning it over your thumb and index finger as you would for a long-tail cast-on.

  • The working yarn should go over your index finger, while the tail end should wrap around your thumb.

Step 2: The First Stitch

  • Position the needle above the yarn and wrap the yarn around it by rotating the needle clockwise to form the first stitch.

  • Align the bottom needle parallel to the top needle. Ensure the working yarn is at the back and the tail is at the front, similar to the setup for a long-tail cast-on.

Step 3: Begin the Cast On

  • Wrap the working yarn under and over the bottom needle from the back to the front—this creates a stitch on the bottom needle.

  • Then, bring the tail under and over the top needle from the front to the back—this creates a stitch on the top needle

  • Repeat this motion, alternating between the top and bottom needles until you reach the required number of stitches.

Step 4: Begin Knitting

  • Once you have cast on the desired number of stitches, turn your work so that the needle with the working yarn is at the top. Hold the tail tight to secure the last cast-on stitch, which will be your first knit stitch.

  • Hold the needles in your hands as you would for regular knitting.

  • Use a working needle if you are using dpns. Knit across the stitches on the top needle, ensuring you do not twist them.

  • Rotate your work and knit across the stitches on the bottom needle.

Step 5: Continue Knitting in the Round

After the first round, the stitches will begin to form a smooth and seamless toe. You can continue knitting in the round, increasing as needed in your pattern.

Tips for Success

  • Tension Matters: Keep your cast-on stitches snug but not too tight to allow for flexibility.

  • Count Your Stitches Carefully: Since the cast-on alternates between two needles, double-check that you have the correct stitch count.

  • Practice Makes Perfect: If your first attempt doesn’t look seamless, don’t worry! Practicing the technique a few times will improve your results.

The Toe-up Cast On (Judy's Magic Cast On) is an excellent technique to add to your knitting skills. Whether you're knitting socks, pouches, or other seamless projects, this method ensures a clean and professional start.
